As a developer myself, i would like to share thoughts about OS development. OSes are short for operating systems, like Windows, MacOS and all. It allows you to interact with a computer.
Many people like to create OSes for the love of programming. Other gather a team for building a usable OS. That is fine, until the people decide to bootstrap the OS (Basically limiting the building process to one OS (commonly itself)). This is like the meanest thing you can do.
Bootstrapping the OS is NOT fine. If anyone is trying to modify the source code, let them edit the source code without installing the OS. The best viewed of this is the MIT's xv6 kernel. It is cross compilable with all the OSes (at least all the *NIX systems)
On the other hand, something like the Apple's XNU Kernel is hell. It requires MacOS to be installed (or at least, MacOS Development SDK which is in itself is so huge). OpenBSD's `sys.tar.gz` is also simmilar, requiring the Host OS to be OpenBSD.
In short, please make your kernels cross compilable, at least with *NIX systems.
Happy development!
